- Cup Finishing Washers also known as finishing washers are used when a countersunk screw (often self tappers) are securing a flat sheet to something the cup holds the countersunk part of the screw providing equal pressure in the direction required, without the conical section forcing out the material sideways and deforming it or cracking it. A reason to use a cup washer withcountersunk screws, is that it looks neater than pan head screws with a flat washer under it. Looks more "finished off", hence the name finishing washer
- Understanding and measuring washer sizing: Washer sizes can be a little confusing so we will do our best to try to make it a little easier to understand. When searching for a washer, firstly, let's say you have a M6 bolt and you want a matching washer, look for washers with M6 at the beginning of the description (you can speed this up by using our "shop by" filters). If you already have a washer and you are trying to match it, measure the inside, then look for a size slightly smaller that your measurement. For example the inside measurement of the washer you measured is approx 6.50mm, you need to look for a M6 washer. If the washer measured 17.25mm internally then you need a M16 Washer. Remember washers are not precision fasteners and variations in sizing do exist and all measurements on our site should only be used as a guide
- Are Metric & Imperial Washers Interchangeable?: In most cases they are which is why we have added metric sizing to the imperial range and imperial sizing to the metric range. If you are still unsure or if the washer dimensions are critical click on the washer you are interested in and view the technical specifications table before ordering
- Material / Coating: Stainless Steel A2-70 G304 is the most popular grade of stainless steel. It is aesthetically pleasing to the eye and very practical because of its excellent corrosion protection in most environments. Most products can be identified by the following markings: A2, A2-70, 304 or G304 but not all washers are stamped. Stainless steels are largely non-magnetic but it is common for some stainless steel fasteners, especially stamped components like washers to show a small degree of magnetism which is a result of work-hardening during the manufacturing process
- Can Stainless corrode?: Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant but not corrosion-proof and corrosion can occur if the material is installed or handled incorrectly. The use of tools and drills made from conventional steel during the installation of stainless steel fasteners may also lead to problems. Even the hardest of tools can produce debris that leaves minute steel particles on the stainless steel fastener surfaces or in pre-drilled holes. It is these particles that often rust when exposed to moisture or oxygen and can result in a stained or tarnished finish to the stainless steel material
