- Difference between a Button Die Nut and a Hex Die Nut?: Button die nuts are used precision threading of bolts, studs, rods and other pieces that require external threading by hand. Hex die nuts are ideal for repairing broken or worn threads by hand. Also useful for machining new external threads in difficult to reach applications. Can also be used for cleaning/repairing external threads
